This novel was the basis for the stage play and George Gershwin opera (both of which he adapted with his wife, Dorothy). The Gershwin opera was adapted for the 1959 film, starring Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Pearl Bailey, and directed by Otto Preminger. It was nominated for numerous awards, winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture-Musical.
