London: printed by W. Bulmer for G. and W. Nicol, 1802. Small 4to (260 x 203 mm). 2 large engraved folding maps partially outlined in color by James Rennell (some light offsetting or toning, few short closed tears at inner margin). Contemporary tree calf rebacked with late 19th century spine gilt, original endpapers preserved (extremities gently rubbed). Provenance: John Wheler (armorial bookplate, twice signed on title-page); Sir Trevor Wheler, Baronet (armorial bookplate); Peter Isaac (1921?2002), bookplate of bibliographer and historian of the British book trade. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, originally published in German in 1801. Includes the accounts of Horneman (1772?1800), who was ?the first European in modern times to traverse the north-eastern Sahara? (Britannica). He originally set out from Cairo to explore the Niger and locate its source on behalf of the African Association in London.
