HOUDINI, Harry (Erik Weisz, 1874 - 1926). Houdini Brothers and Houdini Family Photograph. [New York], 1911. Charming candid photograph of the Houdini family posed outdoors in a back yard, with houses flanking the scene. Included in the portrait are all five Weiss brothers: Nat, Leo, Bill, Harry, and Theo, along with Beatrice (Houdini's wife), three children, and six other women, including Houdini's sister, and the matriarch of the family, Cecelia Weiss, seated in a chair at the center of the scene. 4 1/2 x 5 7/8".
A small ink notation to verso dates the image to August 2, 1911. The 1911 date is also inked on the front, and photo is captioned in the same hand "The Houdini Family" below the group. Perhaps comically, there is also an inked note over the top of a wooden post reading "Kukol," a derogatory reference to Houdini's trusted assistant, Franz Kukol (and his intelligence or lack thereof).
A personal, charming, and likely unpublished image of the Houdini family. Images depicting Houdini with his entire family along with his mother together are RARE.
