HOUDINI, Harry (Erik Weisz, 1874 - 1926). Houdini-Owned and Hallmarked Gaffed Handcuffs. Providence: Providence Tool Co., ca. 1890s. Darby-style cuffs with original screw-in key. Extended length 9 3/4". Working. Stamped above the barrel below each hinge on the hasp is the name "HOUDINI" in block capital letters. Even in their locked condition, the handcuffs are easily opened with a sharp pull from the wearer, indicating that perhaps these restraints were an integral part of Houdini's performances, or even his bridge jumps. Perhaps the hallmarks were a subtle indication to the magician that the cuffs were easily removed despite appearing to be locked.

Owned by Houdini, and the only such example of handcuffs from his home bearing this name hallmark, indicating that the set was most likely of special importance to the great escape artist. 

Uniformly patinated, and in good working condition.
