FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE-PAGE: "To C. Nott, Esq. With the "Author's" Kind regards and thanks for kind assistance at [?] Square - 28/Dec. 1903". On the recto of the frontispiece is a later (1956) gift inscription from Dorothy Whitehead (nee Nott,) presumably a descendant of Nott. It is possible that the recipient of the author's inscription is Charles C. Nott, Sr., (1827-1916), Chief Justice of the Court of Claims.
