JEFFERS, Robinson (1887-1962). An Artist. [Austin, TX:] Privately Printed by John S. Mayfield, 1928. 4to. Mounted frontispiece portrait of Jeffers. Unpaginated. Publisher's plain staple-bound wrappers with label tipped-onto front wrapper (some light toning, soiling, marginal creasing to wrappers). A fine copy of this rare and fragile item. FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 96 COPIES PRINTED. The first appearance of Jeffers' poem, An Artist, as well as a profile of him by Benjamin DeCasseres. There is some confusion about the number of this book actually printed; the colophon states that 96 copies were printed, but other sources state that nearly 200 were printed. Apparently, many copies were destroyed or heavily damaged by a fire, thus the apparent disparity. A true rarity. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy. Measurements: 10 X 8 X 1".
