Half calf gilt, 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, leather lettering?pieces gilt, fleur?de?lis gilt centerpieces in compartments, top edges gilt (few tiny spots of rubbing to boards). Provenance: Neva and Guy Littell (leather gilt label), a distinguished Americana collector whose collection sold en bloc at Parke?Bernet Galleries on 5 February 1945. Second English edition, the first being published in 1844. ?Not only is this the best account of the Santa Fe Expedition, it is one of the best campaign narratives ever written? (Jenkins).
