Kubrick came up with the story, and asked his frequent collaborator, Jim Thompson, to write a screenplay (Thompson's screenplay is more of an extended treatment than a traditional screenplay). As of 2021, producers Bruce Hendricks and Galen Walker were said to have been about to begin filming this film noir, but it seems as if the project never got off the ground.
