Contemporary imitation Spanish calf with raised bands, gilt scrollwork and flowers in compartments, painted endpapers, marbled edges (rubbing). Jean-Baptiste de La Chapelle was a French priest, mathematician, and inventor. A contributor of nearly 300 articles on mathematics and geometry, La Chapelle was also famous for inventing a primitive version of the modern diving suit.
