Laffing Sam Funhouse/Arcade Automaton. British, ca. 1940s. Life size sailor sometimes referred to as "Jack Tar," seated on a coil of rope encircling a wooden spool; when activated he chuckles, laughs, swings his arms and body, and jiggles endlessly in an odd and captivating manner. Operates on 220V. Dressed in an authentic vintage sailor suit. Hand painted papier-mâchė face.

A variety of these unusual animatronic sailors were created in the 1930s and 40s (originally as large and imposing female figures) to attract passers-by to funhouses and dark rides; in later years they have been the source of scares and screams in a variety of horror films. This example was used in many London West-End productions of Sleuth and in smaller incarnations of the show. Approximately 29 x 24 x 55". Third party transportation required. 

Vintage apparel shows wear, but is intact and attractive; minor wear to finish. Mechanically sound and in good working condition.
