[LEE, Robert E. (1807-1870)]. Souvenir: Lee Monument Unveiling, May 29th, 1890. [Richmond: J.L. Hill Print Co., 1890]. FIRST EDITION of this rather uncommon booklet (OCLC only locates 10 copies in institutional holdings). The massive Lee Monument depicting the Confederate General on horseback was installed on Richmond?s Monument Avenue in 1890 where it remained for over a century until a ruling in 2021 by the State Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Virginia approved its removal following several protests the previous year. The transfer of the statue and other monuments were placed in the Black History and Cultural Center of Virginia the following month. In its place, The Emancipation and Freedom Monument was installed on nearby Brown?s Island.
