De Acosta was a poet, novelist, and playwright, who lived her life as an uncloseted lesbian, which was quite daring for her time. She was famous for her many affairs with famous women of her day, including: Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Isadora Duncan, Eve La Gallienne, Tallulah Bankhead, Pola Negri, Katherine Cornell, Alice B. Toklas, and others. Vassardakis was the Greek Consul General, who spent much time in the United States as part of his duties.
