LINDSAY, Norman (Australian, 1879-1969). ?The Funeral March of Don Juan" Original Signed Etching. [N.p.], 1924. Original etching, engraving and stipple image of numerous nude and semi-nude women carrying the lifeless body of the amorous Don Juan. Signed and dated by Lindsay at lower right, captioned in pencil at bottom ?The Funeral March of Don Juan." #16/55. Sight approximately 12 x 14". Matted and framed under plexiglass. Frame size approximately 19 ? x 22". Frame with gold painted floral decorations. Minor rubbing to frame. A fine copy of this notorious original etching. Lindsay had sent several etchings for display at the Australian exhibition, Artists' Week, for July of 1924. Judges had banned three of Lindsay's etchings (including The Funeral March of Don Juan); this caused Lindsay to withdraw all of his art and etchings; he instead displayed them (including the three banned etchings) at a competing exhibition held at the same time. People went to both exhibitions, with a higher turn-out at the unofficial one which Lindsay had sent his withdrawn art and etchings. Not examined out of frame. From the Collection of Louis A. Irmo.
