[LITHOGRAPHY]. [POLITICS]. ?Presidential Barn Door Reel ?The Widow Takes the Cake?? for Sulphur Bitters. Boston, Mass.: A. P. Ordway & Co., [ca. 1884]. Unusual trade card for Sulphur Bitters with a political cartoon lampooning presidential candidate and former Union General Benjamin Butler (dressed as a dancing, maiden), enticing potential suitors (running mates) Samuel Jones Tilden, John Griffin Carslile, Winfield Scott Hancock, and Samuel Jackson Randall. Text on verso advertising Sulphur Bitters. Approximately 7 x 8 ??. Toned, margins trimmed slightly (mostly at right and left margins, with little to no loss of image), mild wear. Very good. A rare and unusual trade card/political cartoon; the 1884 election was ultimately won by Grover Cleveland. As an aside, Samuel J. Tilden is the only presidential candidate who won the popular vote by a majority, but lost the election for the 1876 presidential election (to Rutherford B. Hayes). From the Mark Rucker Collection.
