LUYS, Jules Bernard (1828-1897). Les ?motions chez les sujets en ?tat d?hypnotisme. [Paris: J.B. Bailli?re, 1887]. FIRST EDITION. ?Luys, a highly respected French neurologist?discusses the transmission of states of emotion from one hypnotized person to another? (Crabtree). He was responsible for perpetuating the folly that patients may profit therapeutically from drugs placed at a distance from them. In the 28 photographs the two subjects, Esther and Gabrielle, are studied by their reactions in the hypnotic state when huffing various drugs such as morphine, hashish, etc. Crabtree, 1178; Haymaker, pp. 55-58. A Horowitz high spot.
