LYNN, Dr. (J.W. Simmons, 1836 - 99). Portrait of Dr. Lynn the Magician. New York: Ollivier & Co., ca. 1880. Half-length portrait of the British magician in high-buttoned coat and bow tie. It was Lynn who reportedly inspired Houdini to become a magician. Cabinet card format on photographer's gilt-stamped mount, 6 ? x 4 ?". Rubbing to extremities; near fine. RARE. This portrait is similar to that which appears (in sketch form) on the cover of Lynn's pitch books, The Adventures of a Strange Man and Travels and Adventures. See next lot.
