This mugshot came from the personal collection of a retired Boston Police detective. Malcolm X lived with his sister in Boston from ages 14 to 21 (his age in this mugshot is 20) and embarked on a criminal career. This mugshot was from an arrest for larceny. It was soon after this mugshot was taken that he was arrested again and sentenced to eight to ten years for larceny and other crimes. In 1947, he was transferred to the Norfolk Prison Colony, where he developed a fierce appetite for reading and civil rights, converted to Islam, and reached out to Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad.
