Provenance: C.J. Freeman-Matthews (addressee), a notable collector of autographs. Commander Markham, Captain of HMS Alert, and second-in-command of the British Arctic Expedition under Sir George Nares on the Discovery, which he achieved the record of Farthest North, a record that stood for 20 years.
