[MARTIN, John (1789-1854), illustrator]. MILTON, John (1608-1674). The Paradise Lost of Milton? London: Charles Tilt, 1833. 4to. Illustrated with 24 mezzotint plates. [376] pp. Handsomely bound by J. H. Banks in contemporary full black morocco, boards ruled in gilt, spine ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, yellow endleaves, all edges gilt (some rubbing, wear to binding, some soiling to endleaves, plates toned, foxed, text a bit toned with occasional foxing, two contemporary gift inscriptions on front blank and previous owner's signature on title-page). Very good. FIRST CHARLES TILT EDITION OF THIS ILLUSTRATED VERSION OF PARADISE LOST. ?We know no artist, whose genius so perfectly fitted him being the illustrator of the mighty Milton; and in what we have seen of his conceptions he has more than realized the highest of our hopes. There is a wildness, a grandeur, and a mystery about his designs which are indescribably fine...the painter is also a poet...we look upon these engravings to belong to the foremost order of true genius: beyond this there is no praise." (The Literary Gazette, April 2nd 1825, discussing the true first appearance of these illustrations by Prowett, published from 1825-27). From the Collection of Louis A. Irmo. Measurements: 11 x 8 x 2".
