MAXWELL, John Alan (American, 1904 ? 84). Painting of a Nude and Gouache study by Maxwell. Oil and gouache on board, picturing a nude backstage with a large man in front of her, and above the scene the bust of a woman flanked by a barn. 14 x 7?. The board bounded by black adhesive tape. Inscribed and signed to the mentalist Joseph Dunninger by the artist, and dated in his hand ?Oct. 1949.? A noted illustrator and painter, Maxwell?s work appeared in many leading periodicals and publications, as well as in books by Pearl Buck, Aldous Huxley, Arthur Conan Doyle, and John Steinbeck.
