Featuring the collection of lifelong circus collector John Diesso, this auction includes heralds, couriers, and posters advertising the "greatest shows" of yesteryear. Photographs, route books, scrapbooks, and circus costumes will be also be offered, spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A wide array of early European circus posters will be sold, along with a large library of circus books of several thousand volumes.

[MINSTRELSY]. J. W. Johnson's Old Reliable Virginia Minstrels broadside. Erie Litho & Printing, 1924 (stamped date). Large original broadside advertising the "Old Reliable Virginia Minstrels" of J. W. Johnson. Described as "the show that is different," a "hurricane of fun" and "two hours of the cleanest amusement ever given in your city," the show included performances by the "Virginia Duo" and comedians "Dick & Brown." Double-sided broadside or herald, illustrated with photographs and engravings, as well as a number puzzle which, if completed correctly, could win the bearer four free tickets. Stamped at the foot of the verso with the date of February 20, 1924. Printed by Erie Litho. & Printing Co. of Erie, PA.

Framed in a double-sided frame to an overall size of 11 1/2 x 29 3/4".

 

Condition

Some light toning, but intact and overall in fine condition.
