Tompkins? for Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball and Parley P. Pratt. By order of the Translator, 1841. 16mo. [iv], [1]-634, [637, sic]-642 pp. Final page of Index is missing. Approximately 5 3/8 x 3 3/8". Bound in contemporary full brown calf, boards ruled in blind and decoratively stamped in center, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, three raised bands, light brown endleaves (binding worn, gilt on spine almost completely faded, hinges broken, text block loose in binding, ffep. torn near inner gutter, rfep. missing, text toned, soiled, most pages creased at upper corner, some occasional pencil markings (mainly ?X") in text). With the ink ownership note on the fp.: ?Found by H. Summer Hatch among some old papers belonging to the late Geo. Morison [sic] April 6th 1908" and Hatch's pencil signature (and some penciled addition figures) on the ffep. Good.THE FIRST ENGLISH AND FIRST EUROPEAN EDITION OF THE BOOK OF MORMON, THE FOURTH EDITION OVERALL. Chemised in modern slipcase, with the ownership bookplate on inner chemise of ?J. Eastman Hatch". This is the first edition with the revised version of the Index; the ?Testimony of Three Witnesses" page appears at the front of the book for the first time (it had appeared at the rear in earlier editions.) This edition, published under the auspices of Brigham Young, was essentially a reprint of the 1837 edition, though this edition had British spellings. Young had contracted 5,000 copies, but only 4,050 were actually delivered. From the consignor, quoting a passage written by his ancestor, J. Eastman Hatch: ?I came into possession of this copy from my Uncle George Morrison who brot [sic] it from England in the years of 1850. He was a brother of Grandmother Hannah Morrison Thatcher.
