MORRIS, Chester (1901 - 1970). "Advise and Consent" Production Ephemera with Morris Stage Acted Synopses, Playbills, and Mementos. V.p., early to mid 20th century.
Chester Morris performed as Senator Bob Munson in the Broadway adaptation of Allen Drury's Pulitzer Prize-winning political novel Advise and Consent, between November of 1960 and May of 1961, with a total of 212 performances. Chester performed alongside fellow actors Richard Kiley as Brigham Anderson and Ed Begley as Orrin Knox.
Two of Morris' copies of the Advise and Consent script by playwright Loring Mandel are included: one copy signed by Mandel to Morris on the front cover, with a handwritten note taped to the interior cover, and the other, a typed letter, folded to the copyright page, on personal letterhead. Written correspondence from Academy Award-winning director, Franklin Schaffner, thanking Morris is also enclosed.
Two photographs can also be seen. A signed portrait of Morris' co-star Richard Kiley, inscribed "To Chester, A Loyal Fan," and a phenomenal group photograph featuring Chester, Richard, and Ed alongside Ralph J. Bunche, the celebrated American diplomat and the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Bunche is also thought to be the inspiration for a prominent character in the Advise and Consent sequel, A Shade of Difference.
Ten heavily annotated synopses for many of the stage productions Morris participated in over his career were kept, including one of Morris's first stage productions, The Copperhead. Synopses titles include:

The Subject Was Roses by Frank D. Gilroy. Also includes the spring 1966 season subscribers' preview flyer for the Coconut Grove Playhouse theatre, featuring performance dates for the Chester Morris and Maureen O'Sullivan starring production (with a 29-year-old Dustin Hoffman as the stage manager); and an original parody song written by Morris called "There's No Business Like 'Rose' Business!"
