[MUMMIES]. BOOTHBY, Guy (1867-1905). Pharos the Egyptian. London: Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, 1899. 8vo. Illustrated with 12 plates by John H. Bacon. 376, [8, ads] pp. Publisher's full blue cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THIS POPULAR VICTORIAN STORY ABOUT A RE-ANIMATED MUMMY IN ENGLAND. Pharos is a reincarnated Egyptian wizard who had dueled with Moses and who failed to prevent the tenth plague from killing the pharaoh's son. He had fled into the wilderness and was cursed by the Egyptian Gods, who mummified his body, and forced his spirit to walk the Earth. He eventually went to England where he found his mummy, re-inhabited it, and attempted to bring a plague down on England. One of the best Egyptian-themed horror novels of its time.
