The image was taken August 25, 1966 by Lunar Orbiter V and was intended for mosaic assembly and surface analysis, capturing terrain associated with the Marius Hills, an area noted for volcanic domes and considered significant for geological study. A printed caption from the News Bureau of The Boeing Company (Seattle, Washington) is affixed to the verso, describing the image and its scientific context within NASA’s lunar exploration program; the photograph is credited as a NASA/Boeing image.
