[NATIVE AMERICANS]. MCKENNEY, Thomas L. Memoirs, Official and Personal; with Sketches of Travels Among the Northern and Southern Indians? Two volumes in One? [Bound with, as issued]: On the Origin, History, Character, and the Wrongs and Rights of the Indians? New York: Paine and Burgess, 1846. Two 8vo volumes bound in 1, as issued. Illustrated with 13 engraved plates, including the hand-colored frontispiece portrait of Pocahontas before the title-page of volume 2. 340; 136 pp. Publisher?s full purple cloth, boards ruled and paneled in blind, spine stamped in gilt, yellow coated endleaves (spine sunned, edgeworn, front joint cracking, some wear, soiling, scuffing, bumping to boards, text toned, foxed, ownership signature on rp.) Very good. SECOND EDITION (volume I is not marked as a second edition, but the second volume is marked as a second edition). This is somewhat unusual, as this copy has the hand-colored portrait of Pocahontas, which is normally considered to be a hallmark of the first edition. This book was written by McKenney to create feelings of sympathy of the general public for the Native American tribes (this was issued before the annihilation of the western tribes). Measurements: 10 x 7 x 2?.
