[NEWSPAPERS]. [JESSE JAMES - YOUNGER GANG]. Hagerstown Mail. Hagerstown, MD., February 27, 1874. 4 pp. Approximately 27 1/4 x 20".

Condition

Pages separated at fold, one vertical and two horizontal creases, some marginal creases, wear, small tape repair to upper edge of p. 1. Very good. ON P. 1 IS AN ACCOUNT OF THE ROBBERY OF THE IRON MOUNTAIN RAILROAD, LATER TO BE ATTIBUTED TO THE JESSE JAMES - YOUNGER GANG. This two-column story describes the robbery, in which the (as then unidentified) gang robbed every person on the train as well as the baggage compartment. In one curious passage, the robbers didn't seem to want watches: "They didn't seem to care for watches. The one they took belonged to a man who wouldn't give his name. They took my watch, but the baggage-man said, "For God's sake don't take his watch, it was a present to him," and the captain [the chief robber - possibly Jesse James] ordered them to give it back..."
