[NEWSPAPERS]. ["LIBERTY AFFAIR" AND MENTION OF JOHN HANCOCK]. The Boston Chronicle. Sept. 12-19, 1768. 8pp. [357]-364 pp. Each page approximately 10 1/2 x 8 1/4".

Condition

Worn, soiled, creased, left margins damaged (probably due to this being removed from a bound volume). Very good. THE ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER WITH A LENGTHY ARTICLE ABOUT THE "LIBERTY AFFAIR", ONE OF THE PRECURSOR EVENTS TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. The sloop Liberty, owned by John Hancock, was seized by British customs officials to enforce the duties to be collected, as enacted by the Townsend Acts. After the seizure, many people of Boston rioted, forcing the customs agents to flee. The British eventually sued Hancock, but the suit was eventually dropped, as their evidence was flimsy, and was viewed as political persecution by the people. See p. 360 of the issue. There is another mention of Hancock and Samuel Adams for another event on p. 362.
