Newspaper split into 2 separate leaves, worn, soiled, torn, marginal chipping. Fair. THE UNUSUAL ESCAPE OF SLAVE HENRY "BOX" BROWN - WHO MAILED HIMSELF TO FREEDOM, HIDING IN A BOX. In 1849, Brown escaped slavery in Virginia by having himself mailed to abolitionists in Pennsylvania in a wooden crate. He went on to be an abolitionist, but due to the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, he emigrated to England, where he became a speaker, performer, and magician. He returned to the U. S. in 1875, where he toured as a magician and mesmerist.
