NOVAL, Liborio (Cuban, 1934-2012). Portrait of Fidel Castro. Havana, 1987. Black and white photograph of Fidel Castro dressed in presidential uniform. 20 x 16?. Crease to lower right corner. DATED AND SIGNED BY FIDEL CASTRO AND LIBORIO NOVAL. Numbered 5/20 on verso. Liborio Noval was one of the earliest and most celebrated photographers of the Cuban Revolution. He became particularly famous for his intimate portraits of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara at home - portraits many critics charged amounted to little more than propaganda for the Cuban regime. In addition to his work in Cuba, Noval also worked as a war correspondent in Vietnam and Nicaragua. His photographs have won numerous prizes around the world, and were prominently featured in A Hundred Images of the Cuban Revolution.
