OLIPHANT, Mrs. [Margaret] (1828-1897). Stories of the Seen and Unseen. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwell and Sons, [1902]. 8vo. [vi], [1]-316 pp. Publisher's cloth stamped blind and gilt. FIRST ENLARGED UK EDITION (Sullivan 309).
Apart from her numerous travelogues, autobiographies, and novels of domestic realism, "Mrs. Oliphant" published a small number of supernatural stories, including a popular series featuring a good-hearted "Little Pilgrim" who returns from Heaven to spread goodwill on Earth, called by Sullivan "infuriating for their mawkish, smug religiosity." In 1880, she published a Dickensian novella, A Beleaguered City, in which the spirits of the dead resurrect in a French town and demand the living atone for their materialism. The 4 independent ghost stories collected in this volume, first published in periodicals, contain one of her best tales and among the last she wrote, titled "The Library Window."
