Verso with period ink inscription reading “Atomic Bomb Test Bikini 25th July 1946 Bikini Lagoon Bikini Marshall Is.” and faint U.S. Navy release stamp (“Released Official U.S. Navy Photograph Not To Be Used For Publication”). The image shows the dramatic vertical plume and cloud formation rising from the detonation over the lagoon, one of the earliest postwar nuclear tests. Operation Crossroads marked the first peacetime nuclear weapons tests and was extensively documented by military photographers. Approximately 4 x 5".
