[ORIGINAL ARTWORK]. DEPAOLA, Tomie (1934-2020). Original Artwork from "Fin M'Coul the Giant of Knockmany Hill". [New London: NH, ca. 1981]. Original "Transparent colored inks on Fabriano 140 - lb. hand-made watercolor paper." [from the accompanying documentation]. With a later pencil inscription by dePaola to the purchaser of the artwork at bottom: "for Will C. Howell / Tomie dePaola 1986" (the artwork was created in 1981, but was sold by dePaola in 1986.) Sight approximately 11 x 8 1/2". Matted and framed under plexiglass. Frame size approximately 19 x 15 3/4". ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR P. 2 OF FIN M'COUL, THE GIANT OF KNOCKMANY HILL, DEPICTING M'COUL'S HOUSE ON A HILL WITH SHEEP IN THE FOREGROUND, ACCOMPANIED BY CORRESPONDENCE AND A CONTRACT SIGNED BY DEPAOLA TO THE OWNER STATED ABOVE. The paperwork includes: a typed letter signed by dePaola stating that, although dePaola is selling the original drawing, he retains the copyright to the artwork; a 4-page contract with the purchaser's name and description of the artwork written by hand (most likely by Bob Hechtel, dePaola's longtime chief of staff,)  and signed on p. 3 by dePaola and the collector (the collector's signature is part of the photocopied document - the other manuscript passages and dePaola's signature are original). Also, on the rear of the frame is a letter signed by Hechtel presenting the artwork to the collector and giving instructions for the signing of the contract.

Fin M'Coul, the Giant of Knockmany Hill is an ALA Notable Children's Book, in which the title-character, a peaceful giant (M'Coul), hears a rumor that of one of the scariest giants in Ireland, Cucullin, wants to fight him. When Fin gets home and tells his wife the alarming news, his wife, the clever giantess Oonagh, devises a plan to trick Cucullin and save her husband.

dePaola was a prolific and multi-award-winning children's book artist, whose works include the Strega Nona books, the Bill and Pete books, Charlie Needs a Cloak, and hundreds more. He also appeared in various television projects, including Telling Stories with Tomie dePaola for the Jim Henson Company.
