[PHOTOGRAPHY]. [BURR, Dr. Richard, subject]. Stereoscopic View of Dr. Richard Burr Embalming a Corpse of a Dead Soldier in the Field. [New York: E. & H T. Anthony and Co., ca. 1860s]. Stereoscopic photo of Burr standing over a corpse laid onto a table supported by two barrels, with a tube entering the corpse. Caption on front near image: "Photographic History / The War for the Union." Caption on verso: "War Views. Dr. Richard Burr, Embalming Surgeon, Army of the James. No. 2531" Dual photo on front and caption on rear mounted onto card. Mount approximately 3 x 7". Light rubbing, foxing and toning on verso. Fine. Burr was a notorious embalmer. He had embalmed between an estimated 10,000 to 40,000 soldiers during the Civil War. He had numerous complaints for poor business practices; this led the U. S. Army to establish uniform fees and license embalmers. Rare. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy.
