[PORTRAIT MEDALLION]. [NELSON, Lord Horatio (1758-1805), subject]. Pair of Chocolate Brown Basalt Portrait Medallions. [Wedgwood (?), ca. 1810]. Oval basalt profile portraits of Nelson, one in a brass frame. Portraits approximately 3 ? x 2 ??. Framed portrait frame size approximately 3 ? x 3?. Some tape residue to verso of unframed portrait, light tarnishing to brass frame. Fine. These plaques were quite common in the early 19th century in England. They used all sorts of subjects: politicians, statesmen, authors, military figures, etc. These are well detailed profiles of Nelson in brown basalt. (Black & white colors were normally used - chocolate brown basalt was more rare). Many makers were involved including Wedgwood. This particular portrait is based on the John de Varere portrait for Wedgwood.
