Biffen, Sarah (1784?1850). Portrait of a Young Woman. Circa 1815. Elegantly painted portrait of a dozing woman. Gouache on paper in modern frame. Handsomely framed to an overall size of 15 ? x 13?. Facsimile letter, portrait and biographical information affixed to verso of frame. Fine. Biffen was an accomplished artist who produced portraits, landscapes, and miniatures on ivory. She worked with the paintbrush held between her teeth ? due to the fact that she was born without arms. She also learned to execute needlework and use scissors.
