Maro, Edwin (Walter Truman Best). Portrait of Maro, signed by Karl Germain. Ft. Madison: Courtright, ca. 1907. Half-length portrait in boudoir card format of the great Chautauqua and Lyceum magician in coat and tie. On an embossed photographer’s mount, 10 x 6 ¾”. The verso inscribed in Karl Germain’s hand, “’Maro’ – a true artist and friend – ‘Sic transit Gloria mundi.’ G.” Germain and Maro were contemporaries and friends. Their careers flourished on the Lyceum and Chautauqua circuits that crossed rural America in the three decades before WWII.
