Auxente or Avxente [as in Alex Andre Avxente] was the original name of the Russian-born painter Alexandra Pregel, who lived and worked in Paris during the interwar period and from which she escaped for safe harbor in New York shortly after the German invasion of May 1940, leaving all of her possessions behind at her studio, including all of her unsold artistic output.
