[PRINTING PLATES ? MAGIC] Collection of Over 350 Chicago Magic-Related Printing Plates and Blocks. 1930s ? 50s. A collection of copper and zinc printing blocks and plates, most mounted to wood and used in the production of various magic catalogs, booklets (including both cover art and illustrations), and for the printing of jumbo and standard playing cards (both backs and faces). The majority of the blocks were used by Sam Berland to produce his merchandise in the 1930s and 40s, though a quantity represent the printed output of the ?old reliable" Chicago Magic Co., including the design for its catalog covers, catalog illustrations, and some instruction sheets. Both offset and letterpress blocks are included, many bearing examples include artwork by Harlan Tarbell.Housed on the original 12-drawer oak Hamilton Mfg. printer's cabinet, 22 x 27 x 34". Cabinet finish worn, with blocks dusty and used, but all elements solid and attractive overall.Sam Berland was a printer by trade but also owned and operated a magic shop in Chicago's loop for a short time. He manufactured and printed his own line of magic products for many years. It is likely that he printed items for The Chicago Magic Co., Magic Inc., and other Chicago-based magic businesses, as evidenced by the blocks retained in this cabinet. Note: Third-party shipping is required due to the weight and size of this lot.
