Uniformly bound in contemporary full morocco, each cover with a central ornament stamped in gilt featuring the crowned monogram of Amalie Auguste (Princess of Bavaria), soon to become Napol?on?s daughter-in-law; framed in a neoclassic gilt tooled border, spines with gilt filets and red morocco labels, gilt dentelle turn-ins, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Vol. I with double engraved portrait frontispieces. Extremities rubbed or chipped, few joints slightly separated or with erosion, headbands visible; contents clean and bright. The 18-year old Princess Amalie Auguste of Bavaria married Eug?ne de Beauharnais in 1806, the son of Empress Josephine and stepson to Napoleon later that year. Two years prior, Eug?ne had been crowned prince (heir apparent to the crown of Italy), having served Napol?on as aide-de-camp on the Italian and Egyptian campaigns. After Napoleon?s abdication, Amalie and Eug?ne returned to Bavaria and in 1817, Eug?ne became Duke of Lichtenberg and Prince of Eichst?tt.
