SARBAN (pseudonym of WALL, John William, 1910-1989). Ringstones [and] The Sound of His Horn [and] The Doll Maker. London: Peter Davies, 1951-1953. 8vos. Publisher's cloth in original graphic dust jackets. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTINGS, THE COMPLETE OUTPUT PUBLISHED DURING HIS LIFETIME.
"Sarban" was the pen name of British career diplomat John William Wall, whose literary practice lasted only a few years, amounting to these three volumes. The most famous, his novel The Sound of His Horn, imagines a future world in which the Nazis have won WWII and operate forested sporting grounds where they hunt genetically-modified human-animal hybrids. It saw mixed reception upon release but has since been reclaimed as a forgotten classic. The other two volumes, Ringstones and The Doll Maker, collect Wall's supernatural short stories. His unpublished works have been collected in volumes from Tartarus Press.
