Carved and painted wooden circus cage wagon side, originally from the Sells Bros. Circus, painted red and covered with gilded carvings in 2-3 inch relief, including depictions of a jester, eagle, seraph, and dragon or mythological winged creature. Attributed to Samuel Anderson Robb, the master American woodcarver renowned for tobacco trade figures and circus art. Restored condition. In two pieces, stored in wooden crates.

Width 12 ft.; height 64”; depth 2-3”.

The panel was found in the rafters of a barn in the Ringling Bros. winter quarters in Baraboo, Wisconsin in the early 1950s and was previously owned by Charles Philip Fox; and exhibited at various museums including The Ringling Art Museum, The Milwaukee Art Museum, The Columbus Museum of Art, The New York State Museum (Albany), and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Smithsonian, Washington, D.C. An important piece of American circus and folk art.
