I guess it's because I'm troubled deep within my subconscious mind. Phyllis, I want you to know that I don't write too many people. Hundreds and hundreds of people have written me, but it seems like most are indifferent and only seek contact without regard for my feelings... So please know that I'm taken by your letters... Yes, I like to laugh. even in the midst of all these problems I've created... I still have to be able to laugh and smile. But deep inside my heart cries... I also have a strong faith in God. I know that I'm forgiven for all the sins I've committed, and I must do what is right and honest. It's a long, long story about my inner struggle... a struggle that still besets me daily." "Phyllis, I better shine a little clarity on the way I may have come across about pictures. No! I do not feel your a person to send naughty photos..." "Not bragging, but did you know my first crime I was taken to court for was safe cracking? I was 12 yrs. old! I've been convicted for cheating at gambling in Las Vegas... After the Marine Corps I got involved with some heavy people in Chicago..."

Evans had a much longer rap sheet larger than alluded to in this letter, including a conviction for rape in 1986, and numerous other crimes, both petty and serious. He murdered at least 3 people from 1985 to 1991. He had confessed to killing victims at parks and rest stops in more than 20 states. His known victims were all female, and at least one (a 10-year old girl) suffered sexual battery. He was stabbed to death in the showers by a fellow inmate. This letter exudes charm and emphasizes the positive aspects of his personality, while effectively minimizing his savagery.
