SHAIKHET, Arkady (Russian, 1898-1959). A Miner of the Chiatur Manganese Mines Listening to a Radio Transmission. Circa 1920s. Gelatin silver print. Inscribed with the title and "R 5 - U.S.S.R." Various stickers, annotations in pencil, and stamps to reverse, including an 'Underwood & Underwood' stamp. Sheet: 6 1/2 x 8 1/2". 

 

The Chiatura manganese mines in central-western Georgia, along the Qvirila River, are one of the largest manganese deposits globally, with reserves of 239 million tonnes. In operation since 1879, the site is known for its high-quality sedimentary manganese ore and has shaped the local industrial town.

Condition

Scratches. Creasing and tearing, particularly to corners. Top left corner torn almost all the way, approximately 1/2". Bottom left corner torn off, measuring 1 1/2".
