[SHERLOCK HOLMES]. DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan (1859-1930). "The Adventure of the Dying Detective" in "Two Bully Good Stories" from the YMCA Booklet Packet. New York: Association Press, 1918. 32mo. 85 pp. Publisher's staple-bound printed wrappers. Offered with the three other staple-bound booklets that were issued with "The Adventure of the Dying Detective". All housed in publisher's printed box ("Booklet Packet") with flaps and lids. THE SCARCE SECOND SEPARATE AMERICAN EDITION OF "THE ADVENTURE OF THE DYING DETECTIVE," WHICH IS MUCH MORE RARE THAN THE FIRST.
This second separate American edition was printed by the YMCA for the benefit of American soldiers and sailors during WWI. "The Adventure of the Dying Detective" is one of two stories (general title: "Two Bully Good Stories"), the other story being "Grey Cloud" by Jack Hines. The titles of the other three booklets are: "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" by Dr. Frank Crane, "Some Words of President Wilson About Religion," "The Stuff That Wins" by Luther H. Gulick, M. D. [And:] "Out of the Fog" by C. K. Ober. [And:] "Captain Dick Takes a Vacation" by Owen Morgan, "The Next War" by Frederick Harris. These titles were different than the titles issued with the first separate American edition. Although the first separate American edition is quite rare, this second edition is even more scarce, as there are only a handful of known extant copies of this edition. This second separate edition was unknown to bibliographer Richard Lancelyn Green.
Condition
Booklets somewhat toned, edgeworn with short tears, light chips, and some marginal creasing to wrappers, minor occasional soiling; publisher's box toned, worn, occasionally soiled, lower lid taped closed. Still, a near fine copy of this scarce and fragile item.
