[SHERLOCK HOLMES]. DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Hound of the Baskervilles Serialized in The Strand Magazine, Complete in Two Volumes. London: George Newnes, 1901-1902. Vol. XXII, June to December, 1901; and Vol. XXIII, January to June, 1902. 8vos. Illustrated by Sidney Paget. Publisher’s blue pictorial cloth stamped black and gold, edges gilt. THE COMPLETE SERIALIZATION OF DOYLE'S 'THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.'
This was the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes' most famous case, marking his return after disappearing over Reichenbach Falls in "The Final Problem," published 1893, which Doyle described as the "inevitable relapse after repentance.” The narrative was particularly well suited for the publication, each chapter ending in a cliffhanger "to be continued" in the subsequent issue. The novel appears here alongside numerous other stories, including H.G. Wells' "The New Accelerator."
Condition
Boards soiled and toned, extremities rubbed, fraying and wear to corners, corners bumped, spine blocks pushed and darkened; 1901 with paper loss and damage at right. Text block with light handling, occasional spotting and soiling, toning to endpapers and throughout; 1901 with ownership inscription to tanned front flyleaf and index. Very good.
