[STARRETT, Vincent (1886-1974), his copy]. DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Crime of the Congo. London: Hutchinson & Co., [ca. 1909]. 8vo. Illustrated with photographic frontispiece of mutilated Congolese. 128 pp. Publisher's printed wrappers. FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXPOSURE OF THE HORRIFIC TREATMENT OF THE CONGOLESE, VINCENT STARRETT'S COPY WITH HIS SIGNATURE ON THE HALF-TITLE. The inhumane treatment of the Congolese was a cause célèbre for many people, including Doyle, and Mark Twain (King Leopold's Soliloquy, 1905). An excellent association.

Condition

Wrappers worn, creased, somewhat chipped (spine occasionally chipped and torn with relatively minor loss), rear wrapper soiled, text toned, pp. 98-99 lightly soiled, a small portion of text on p. 99 is scuffed with some minor textual loss, some occasional creasing to text. Good.
