To Which is Added, That Sketch of Dr. Swift's Life, written by the Doctor himself, which was lately presented by the Author of this Essay to the University of Dublin. London: Charles Bathurst, 1755. 8vo. [4], 376, 53 pp. Lacks the final four pages of ads, but has the preliminary blank. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt double-fillet borders on covers, gilt-decorated spine with raised bands and burgundy morocco label. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BIOGRAPHY OF SWIFT.

Front joint expertly rehinged, text toned and foxed, bookplates of Charles Whibley and Paul Jordan Smith. A handsome copy.

Deane Swift (1707-1783) was the father of Theophilus Swift and cousin of Jonathan Swift. He deals particularly with the great satirist's relations to his contemporaries. Included in the text are unpublished letters from Dr. Swift, and material by other members of the Swift circle. Teerink 1345. Rothschild 1989.
