"McDaniel's story told in the first person. He was employed by and became a stockholder in the Texas Western Railroad. On his trip for the railroad he visited Houston, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Fort Concho, Pecos, and Presidia Del Norte. He described the topography, the flora and fauna, agriculture, stock-raising, industry and life and customs of the people. He noted the German settlers and their differences from the Americans; soldiers, white and black; Mexicans, homes, religion, education, and culture on the frontier. He described in great detail the city of Houston, its rail connections, and its possibilities for future growth. An excellent and valuable work." (Clark, I, 140).
