"Steamer editions" (or "Steamer Bulletins") were special bi-monthly or weekly newspaper digests published in California during the Gold Rush. Printed on lightweight paper, they were designed to be sent on steamships via the Isthmus of Panama to the Eastern US and Europe. These newspapers acted as a vital information bridge before the Transcontinental Telegraph and provided a curated recap of the past fortnight's news. Because the original papers had to survive a grueling multi-week ocean and overland journey—often suffering from heat and salty moisture in the mailbags—surviving copies are highly valued historical artifacts.
